At times I feel that I am staying in two completely different worlds - the world inside ISB and the world outside ISB. The world inside ISB is marked by a mirage of ambitions, aspirations, success and at times dejection. The world outside is the reality....so many things are happening in the outside world.....certain things adding to the beauty of the world and others exposing the darkest fears that human mind can ever think of. And the world inside is so different from the world outside. While "reality" is something that guides the outside world...an obsession towards "pay package" guides the inside world.
Initially, I expected the average maturity level within ISB to be more than that of the outside world...but I really wonder if it is, in reality. I have seen people getting dejected on something as trivial as not getting a shortlist in a company. They feel as if they have lost something seriously important in their lives. This myopic philosophy towards life can really hamper the process towards the objective that management education is likely to provide. People identify their prime aspiration with recovering back the 15 lakhs and if they are not able to secure a package of more than 15 lakhs, then their objective of spending a year doing MBA is not fulfilled. An average person in ISB is no doubt exceptionally talented and brilliant as far as academics is considered...and it would have been great if the maturity level were on par with the academic brilliance. IQ is important....but even more important is EQ. Pay package is important...and that is one reason all of us are here...but it is not the only reason...And if the obsession of an individual towards the pay package is at the cost of more important takeaways...I can only pity the individual....

No offence meant...but please give me an honest answer...
Wont you feel even a bit dejected if you dont get the most coveted shortlist that you were really looking forward to?
We are all humans here...And its natural to get emotional...And the most beautiful part is the human mind recovers as quickly as it fell into the state of depression...
At the same time consider this..the guy who was expecting a 15lac package and didnt get it and a guy who gets it..No matter what you say or how much ever you think it doesnt really matter...peers of these two guys will consider the winner of the '15 lac package' to be on a superior level than the other...And the prestige, the status, the admiration and everything will go to the 'better package' guy...So its only natural that "They feel as if they have lost something seriously important in their lives"....After all who wants to feel inferior in front of his own peers???
I have always believed that there is something called luck....and at times like this (b school placements) it comes in its most powerful form....
People need to understand this...
And as far as prestige, admiration etc are considered....trust me the real prestige and admiration is not built in bschool placements..nor in the first job one gets after the placement...rather it is built during professional career....
In fact, the best way to judge the power and admiration of a person is to find out what he has done 5 years after his MBA and not immediately after the school.
Bschool placement is just a mirage...some are lucky on a particular day and some others are not...and sometimes people stress themselves too much on this....this stress factor is something which is not worth it.
And I have always believed that...if someone wants something...he/she will get it...either sooner or later. This holds good for these jobs also.
BTW...Prestidigitator...i have a feeling that you have already done your MBA...by any chance are you an ISB alum...
Sabyasachi,
I have been following your blog from its start. I am amazed how mature you are beyond your age. Never lose it.
BTW, I totally agree with you on the point that pay package in placement should not matter at all. More important are which career you want to pursue, what role, the career changes that you plan etc. "salary/money" would follow later. Another point is that in case of placements never look at what others are getting. Look at whether you are getting what you aimed for. Having gone through these in my undergrad and after so many years, I know how much you can overcome others in money/salary (if that is what one wants) by great career planning!

Jill,

I will be greatly privileged, if I can know something more about you...

well i know lot of peoples who are earning much more than 15 lakh and not even completed their matric ..... so i would say money is not everything about bschools . its just life style these peoples have in corporate world ..... .. but the matter of fact is you will find lot of corporate's hired bschool graduates did not completed their graduation too .. infact in a survey done in US a newspaper found that most peoples successful in corporate world did not even complete their degree's and spend their golden time (young age) to build businesses ... ofcourse degree matters but what i think that also matter is your boldness , capability of taking risks and your thoughts and motivation .. i think just corporate's will learn that just degree should not be standard to hire a person . you should also see other things ...
Hey Sabya,
Your posts are a nice fodder for thought.
I completely agree with your view point and have experienced it first hand during my campus placement in 2002.
I guess we should always remember that Life is not about earning high salaries but about how we respond to the challenges life thorows at us...
Your post also sets my expecations [from ISB and an MBA degree] right in case i get admitted to ISB.
Thanks for the nice post.
